WOW Punk poet legend Dr John Cooper Clark comes to Worthing…

On 14 April 2016, the quiet seaside town of Worthing is bracing itself for the arrival of punk poet legend Dr John Cooper Clark.

Worthing WOW festival launches with this brilliant event that will shake Worthing to its very core.

drjohnCooper Clarke shot to fame in the 1970s as the best-loved and most important performance poet of this generation. He is as vital now as he was, when his satirical and funny verse, delivered in a unique rapid-fire performance style, resonated with the punk movement.

In 1978 he signed a major world album deal with Epic Records. His four albums, recorded with the Invisible Girls and produced by the legendary Martin Hannett, are acknowledged as masterpieces.

Since then his career has spanned cultures, audiences, art forms and continents. Today Cooper Clark is one of British society’s key orators, and his mark is indelibly seen in modern pop culture. His trademark look continues to resonate with fashionistas young and old, and his poetry is included on national curriculum syllabus.

His impact on modern music is also huge, and can be heard in his recent collaborations with The Arctic Monkeys and Plan B (Cooper Clark has been involved in two global number one albums in the last two years).

His own career-spanning Box set Anthologia was released on Sony in late 2015 to great critical acclaim. Music week called him “One of the most important artists ever”.

Cooper Clark’s collection of poems ‘10 years In An Open Necked Shirt’, is the bestselling poetry books of all time and he co-headlined The Poetry Olympics at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall with Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso.

In July 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University Of Salford, and he is studied by college and university students throughout the world – ensuring that he will be forever ingrained in the psyche of the world’s youth.

Dr John Cooper Clark’s latest show (which he is touring across the world) is a mix of classic verse, extraordinary new material, and hilarious ponderings on modern life, good honest gags, riffs and chat.

It’s an un-missable opportunity to witness a living legend at the top of his game, and Worthing WOW are delighted and honoured to welcome him to the Connaught Theatre Worthing.

Event details Worthing WOW festival runs from 28th May-12th June. This one off event brings the very best of spoken word to the town, harnessing the new creative energy of Worthing and acting as a springboard to the very best of film, play and book events to come during the festival itself.
